The William S. Richardson School of Law and PALS welcomes Visiting Scholar Junko Sugimoto from Nihon University in Japan.
Professor Sugimoto will be researching bankruptcy law and comparing the U.S. with Japan, working with Charles Booth. She is particularly interested in cases involving the amendments of the priority rule and reorganization. Professor Sugimoto will be visiting until August 2015.

Richardson/China Foreign Affairs University Discuss Possible Areas of Collaboration

On May 2, a Delegation from the China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing visited Richardson to discuss possible areas of collaboration. Several PALS Professors met with the Delegation. PALS Professor Charles Booth reported that a very productive meeting took place followed by lunch at Kirin restaurant.

PALS Professor Charles Booth Speaks at American Chamber of Commerce in Bejing on Chinese Insolvency Law

On April 1, PALS Profeessor Charles Booth and Professor Wang Wei Guo of the China University of Politics and Law spoke about “China’s Insolvency Law: A History and Review of Current Developments” at an American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Beijing event.
Charles also met with AmCham members to discuss opportunities for Richardson law students with an interest in China, and attended meetings at the People’s Bank of China and at the Asian Development Bank to discuss Chinese bankruptcy law.
On April 2, he was interviewed about bankruptcy and reorganization issues for a CCTV oral history project on the Chinese SOE reform process, which will lead to a TV documentary series.
On April 10, Charles co-chaired a panel about UNCITRAL Projects: A Model Law for Recognition of Insolvency Judgments and Other Recent Developments at the ABA Business Bankruptcy Committee Spring Meeting in Los Angeles.
PALS Professor Appointed to APFF/APEC Business Advisory Council CapitalMarkets Workstream As Head of Investor Rights

PALS Professor Charles Booth was appointed head of the Investor Rights in Insolvency Sub-Group of the APFF/APEC Business Advisory Council Capital Markets (Information) Workstream. He chaired the first meeting of this Sub-Group in Hong Kong on March 21.
The next day, Charles spoke about “Hong Kong Personal Insolvency Law” to the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Professional Diploma in Insolvency course.
The following week, Charles lectured to 25 Mongolian judges/trainers about bankruptcy law as part of an International Development Law Organization/European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (IDLO/EBRD) Commercial Law Judicial Training Project in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. He also met with the three Mongolian judges/trainers he is assisting with the drafting of a Mongolian Bankruptcy Law Handbook.
Later in the week, Charles met with U.S. Treasury officials, and also gave a recruitment talk to 10 law students at the National University of Mongolia.
IAPBL Director/PALS Professor Charles Booth Serves As Delegate For International Insolvency Institute of the UN Commission on International Trade Law

IAPBL Director/PALS Professor Charles Booth served as a delegate for the International Insolvency Institute to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group II (Arbitration and Conciliation), Settlement of Commercial Disputes: Draft Convention on Transparency in Treaty-Based Investor-State Arbitration, at the United Nations in New York City.
Charles also have a lecture, “Corporate Insolvency in Asia: Developing Effective Insolvency Infrastructures in China and Japan” as part of the International Insolvency Course at St. John’s School of Law, NYC. Bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper served as commentator.
The course is supported by the American College of Bankruptcy and the lecture was broadcast live to law schools at Chicago Kent, Georgetown, Illinois (Champagne), Illinois (Chicago), University of Pennsylvania, Utah, and Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.

On January 29, the Institute of Asian-Pacific Business Law (IAPBL) sponsored a talk by Professor Diana Criclivaia of the Faculty of Economic Sciences at Moldova State University, entitled “Needs, Realities, and How to Move Forward: The Differences Between the Tax Collecting Cultures of Moldova and the United States of America.”
